First half of November update

We recently had Home Is Where the Art Is with The American Black Lung and I Am the Lion performing. It was a free show displaying art and giving out free food and handing out prizes including a skateboard from Starr Skates and a Gibson Les Paul guitar provided by Guitars Etc. Our Family, Open Inn, Eon and La Paloma helped out. It was a great turn out and we thank all those that came. Pictures are available on the Skrappy's myspace. This week we are having another all local bands show with Life In Chains (members of Alarm and ex-Desperado!), Rituals (formally Some Nerve with ex members of Issei Sagawa, Wintch Mob and Fake Out) and Sex Prisoner (ex Female Snake). The show starts around eight or nine Thursday, November 19th with the cost of $5. Please join! It's been a while since we've had a hardcore punk show.

Think. Talk. Take Action.

Transportation. Safety. Education. Jobs. The environment. These are community issues that are on the minds of adults today. They are also the issues that are on the minds of young people, although they don’t often get a chance to voice their opinions about them. A group of Pima County youth known as The Hi Tech Team is looking to change that with Think. Talk. Take Action: A Community Gathering for Youth and Families, October 8, 6-10 pm at the Historic Rialto Theatre. The event will bring together youth and adults to “think about community issues and envision new possibilities, talk to people in power, and take action to make a difference,” says Dr. Judith Anderson, CEO of Every Voice in Action Foundation, the sponsor of the event.
“Through this event, we hope that youth and adults can build relationships and be able to cooperate with each other in order to solve issues, and create solutions in our communities,” says Marcos Perez, member of the Hi Tech Team. “ Everyone can provide their proactive assets: We can all become the change we wish to see in this world”
The multi-faceted event will include an open mic session—offering young people a chance to perform on the Rialto stage—and the screening of youth-produced short videos, including the premier of a short documentary film entitled Tucson Through the Eyes of Youth, which was produced and directed by the Hi Tech Team. The team’s purpose: To capture youth voice and to expose community issues and solutions through digital media.

Voting for Siobhan

Hello Everyone,

Elizabeth here from Siobhan. I recently made the semi-finals for the Designer of the Year contest for Scottsdale Fashion Week. The next stage of the contest is online voting. Since I am an "out of towner" in this competition, I'm really trying to get Tucson to rally behind me. If any of you can take 2 minutes to vote for me (you have to register first which can be annoying but doesn't take more than 2 min) I would be so appreciative. You can also vote every 24 hours. I did a Day of the Dead theme for the fall. The unveiling show was wonderful. Everyone did a wonderful job and I got great feedback. Please pass this along. I enclosed pictures from the show.

Hey! Get involved with your youth community!

Clubs come and go. You are what makes this club yours. This is where your friend's band plays. There is where you meet new people. If you need help, this is the place where we can help. We are working on making a change in the way homeless and homeless sheltered youth are treated to help improve the system. We are doing research, mapping, youth forums and a large film project for this study. We will also have a chance to present our findings to local legislator.
Skrappy's is looking for more volunteers for sound, cafe, stage, flyers, and special fund raising events. If you would like to get involved in a project or volunteer, see any staff member or sign up at Skrappy's or email Kathy at skrappys@gmail.com

"I feel that every kid that comes here is amazing. The volunteers and bands that donate their time and energy are the most awesome people you will ever meet! Thank you for your support!"

Handoff ceremony to celebrate Skrappy’s independence

Media, government officials and the public are invited to a handoff ceremony to celebrate Skrappy’s youth center realizing its long-held dream of independence.

Skrappy’s will have an open house from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at its new location at 191 E. Toole. The hand off ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. (Please park at the train depot or in the pay lot across Toole.)

Skrappy’s was founded in 1995 by parents Kathy and Bill Wooldridge, along with youth involved in underground punk bands in Tucson. Since 2002, Skrappy’s has been a program of Our Family Services, a Tucson-based social services agency that provides counseling, education, housing, mediation and help for people in crisis.

As of July 1, the Skrappy’s center is operated by the Tucson Youth Collective, a community group of longtime Skrappy’s youth volunteers and adults who are forming their own nonprofit corporation. President of the Board of Directors of TYC is Joyce Serido, a University of Arizona researcher.

“This is something Kathy and the kids have wanted for a long time,’’ said Our Family Executive Director Sue Krahe. “We are happy to have supported this program and nurtured these young people long enough for them to be ready to step up and leave the nest. We’re proud of them and wish them every success.”

Currently, Skrappy’s offers free classes in sewing and clothing design, breakdancing, art and community involvement from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. They also are working on community mapping projects in collaboration with the University of Arizona.

The center’s nationally recognized positive youth development partnerships with the UA will continue under the guidance of Dr. Lynne M. Borden of the Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Our Family will continue to collaborate with Skrappy’s through its other services to youth and families.

Skrappy’s is planning a grand opening for later this year when all programming and facilities in the new building are fully operational.
